What is Airotor Handpiece? - an Overview

An airotor handpiece is a high-speed dental tool designed for precision in various dental procedures. It operates using a turbine mechanism, which allows it to rotate at extremely high speeds to efficiently cut through hard dental tissues like enamel and dentin. The LED airotor handpiece enhances visibility during procedures by incorporating a built-in LED light, which illuminates the treatment area, ensuring better accuracy and reducing eye strain for the dentist. This advanced handpiece is essential for tasks such as tooth preparation, cavity removal, and shaping, offering both speed and precision in dental care.

What is Airotor Handpiece?

Airotors in dentistry are an essential extension of a dentist's working hand, with clinicians today relying heavily on their optimal performance for a smooth and efficient practice. Modern dental handpieces are intricate assemblies of precision components that work in seamless synchronization at very high speeds. This sophisticated setup provides a smooth, powerful cutting action, enabling clinicians to effortlessly navigate through hardened tooth structures. The result is a clean, precise preparation margin with minimal trauma to both the patient and the practitioner.

How Does an Airotor Handpiece Work?

When air from the compressor is introduced into the handpiece via the foot pedal, it travels through the airline connected to the handpiece coupling. This air then moves through the handpiece shell and into the head, where it is directed over the turbine's impeller. As the impeller catches the air, it rotates at extremely high speeds, causing the spindle to turn like a windmill. This rotation drives the bur, which is securely locked into the spindle assembly, converting air energy into rotary motion.

Turbines operate at speeds around 400,000 rpm, the fastest of any tool, though not all of this speed reaches the tooth. The turbine's speed is categorized into free speed, which is the maximum rpm with no load, and active speed, which is the speed when the bur engages with the tooth. Most air rotors achieve an active speed between 180,000 to 200,000 rpm, about half of the free speed, depending on the contact pressure. The "torque" of the handpiece, or its ability to remove tooth structure, directly affects the physical effort required by the operator. Higher torque means less strain on the dentist’s hand and wrist.

Types and Variations in Airotor handpieces:

Standard Airotors: Traditional and versatile, suitable for a wide range of dental procedures.

Super Torque Airotors: Designed for high-speed, heavy-duty tasks requiring extra power and torque, such as crown work or removing restorations.

LED Airotors: Equipped with built-in LED lights for improved visibility during procedures, enhancing precision.

Non-LED Airotors: Basic models without built-in lighting, used for routine procedures where additional illumination isn't necessary.

Push Button Airotors: Feature a push-button mechanism for quick and easy bur replacement during procedures.

Chuck Type Airotors: Utilize a chuck mechanism for secure bur placement, ideal for delicate, precise tasks.

Mini Head Airotors: Have a smaller head size, useful for accessing tight spaces, often used in pediatric and endodontic procedures.

Disposable Airotors: Designed for single use to ensure hygiene and infection control.

Ergonomic Airotors: Built for comfort with ergonomic grips and lightweight construction to reduce hand fatigue during extended procedures.

Uses of Airotor Handpiece:

  • Rapidly removes decayed tooth material to prepare for fillings.
  • Shapes teeth for the fitting of crowns, bridges, and other prosthetics.
  • Assists in accessing root canals and preparing the tooth for further treatment.
  • Smooths and finishes restorations for a polished appearance.
  • Efficiently removes existing crowns, fillings, or other dental materials.
  • Used in minor oral surgical procedures to cut or shape bone and tooth structure.

Benefits of Using an Airotor Handpiece:

  • Designed for high-speed operation, airotors enable quick and efficient removal of material during dental procedures, reducing the duration of treatment and enhancing the dentist's productivity.
  • The high rotational speed of the airotor handpiece allows for precise control over the shaping and cutting of tooth structures, making it ideal for tasks like cavity and crown preparation where accuracy is crucial.
  • Airotors are versatile tools, suitable for a wide range of dental procedures such as cavity preparation, crown and bridge work, and decay removal. Their compatibility with different burs and accessories allows dentists to perform multiple tasks with a single handpiece.
  • The combination of high-speed operation and water spray during cutting minimizes heat production, reducing the risk of patient discomfort and making the dental experience more pleasant.
  • Known for their smooth cutting action, airotors produce less vibration, enhancing patient comfort and making them particularly useful for delicate procedures or work on sensitive areas of the mouth.
  • The slim and compact design of airotor handpieces improves maneuverability, especially in hard-to-reach areas of the oral cavity, facilitating better outcomes during dental procedures.

Tips for Airotor Maintenance:

  • During the warranty period, dentists should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and use the recommended lubricants provided by the manufacturer for the handpiece.
  • It's essential for the dentist to record the handpiece's unique identification number, as each manufacturer assigns a specific number to their handpieces.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for temperature settings during autoclaving or sterilizing to ensure the handpiece is not exposed to damaging conditions.
  • After use, the handpiece should be given to the assistant, who will implement all necessary barrier techniques.
  • Select the lubricant carefully to ensure proper maintenance of the rotating instrument. Most clinicians prefer to lubricate the handpiece with the bur in place.
  • Lubrication can be performed either before or after sterilization.
  • Before using the autoclave handpiece, it should be run for at least 30 seconds to expel any excess oil from the head of the handpiece.
