A petri dish is a small, shallow, transparent dish with a lid, primarily utilized in biological experiments for cell culture. It is commonly employed in microbiological studies as a container for growing microbes on nutrient-rich media.

Types of Lab Petri Dishes:

Shape: Petri dishes typically come in cylindrical shapes with diameters ranging from 30 to 200 millimetres, although square and rectangular variations are also accessible.

Usability- Depending on their composition, Petri dishes can be either reusable or disposable. Reusable dishes are durable and can endure multiple cycles of dry or wet sterilization procedures.

Material- Lab Petri dishes can be made of various materials, each with its own advantages and suitability for different applications:

Glass: Borosilicate glass, commonly used, is heat resistant and suitable for sterilization in autoclaves or laboratory ovens at temperatures ranging from 120°C to 160°C.

Plastic: Plastic Lab Petri dishes are often disposable, minimizing the risk of cross-contamination. However, they may have limitations in low-temperature applications.

  • Polystyrene: Disposable and cost-effective, widely used in industrial and clinical settings for routine microbiological testing.
  • Polypropylene: Lightweight, heat-resistant, and durable, offering advantages over glass Petri dishes.

Cellulose acetate: Ideal for applications requiring enhanced gas permeability, allowing for substantial oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange.

Nitrile: Suitable for low-temperature applications, with a temperature range of -30°F to 275°F.

Vented and non-vented: Vented lab petri dishes feature small plastic protrusions on the inside of the lid, allowing for gaseous exchange and evaporation. They are ideal for aerobic cultures. In contrast, unvented lab petri dishes lack these protrusions and are suitable for anaerobic growth. The choice between vented and unvented dishes depends on the specific requirements of the experiment and the desired growth conditions.
