Forceps are a hinged, handheld tool which is used to grab and hold objects. Forceps come in handy when the fingers are too large to grasp a small object. The term forceps is used in medical fields only. Forceps use the principle of lever. Medical-grade forceps are made from surgical stainless-steel or carbon steel and can easily withstand high temperatures when being sterilized in an autoclave. Other materials to manufacture forceps are chromium and vanadium.
There are two major categories of forceps –
- Disposable – they are made from plastic or other materials and other lower-quality materials.
- Non-disposable – they are made from high-quality materials and can withstand effects of chemicals, body fluids, cleaning agents and different methods of sterilization.
There are a variety of forceps listed on our website, some of them are listed below –
- Thumb Forceps – they are held between the thumb and two fingers of one hand. The top of the forceps rests on the dorsal interosseous muscle between the thumb and index finger.
- Locking Forceps – sometimes called clamps are used to grasp and hold tissue. They are also used to compress an artery to stall bleeding and serve the purpose of grasping forceps. There are a variety of locking forceps such as hemostats, Kelly forceps, etc.
