In medical terms, shunt is a pathway which is created by making a hole in the patient’s body, it allows for movement of fluid from one part of the body to another. The term describes either acquired or congenital (birth defect) shunts. Shunts can be programmable and non-programmable. Programmable shunts can be externally adjusted by a magnetic device. To prevent excess or over-drainage a surgeon might implant a device which along with the shunt, which prevents the over-drainage.
There are a variety of shunts that are used in the medical practice. Some of them are listed below –
- Cardiac Shunt – is the pattern of blood flow in the heart which diverges from the normal circuit of the circulatory system.
- Hydrocephalus Shunt – are used to treat hydrocephalus which causes increased intracranial pressure. A single-way valve is used to drain extra fluid by drilling in the skull.
- Denver shunt – also known as Peritoneovenous shunt, drains the peritoneal fluid (liquid made in the abdominal cavity which keeps the surface tissue of the abdominal wall lubricated) from the peritoneum in the veins, generally in the superior vena cava or the interior jugular vein.
